OIPMA Calls for Urgent Action and Comprehensive Peace Efforts in Sudan at the 57th Human Rights Council

Geneva, September 12, 2024 – The International Organisation for the Least Developed Countries (IOLDC) addressed the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis in Sudan and calling for decisive action to address both the immediate violence and the deeper causes of instability in the region.

In its statement, the IOLDC stressed the urgency of responding to the findings of the UN Fact-Finding Mission’s report on Sudan, which details widespread atrocities that may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The statement emphasized that the suffering endured by the Sudanese people demands a swift and sustainable ceasefire as a top priority.

However, the IOLDC warned that achieving lasting peace in Sudan requires more than ceasing hostilities. The organization pointed to deeper underlying factors contributing to the conflict, notably the influence of political Islam and, in particular, the role of the Muslim Brotherhood. The IOLDC cautioned that the Brotherhood’s efforts to seize power through its extensive networks have exacerbated sectarian tensions and deepened the crisis, hindering progress toward stability.

The IOLDC further expressed concern over the broader regional implications of the Muslim Brotherhood’s activities in Sudan. Given Sudan’s strategic location and porous borders, the region is vulnerable to exploitation by terrorist groups, such as ISIS. This growing instability, the IOLDC warned, threatens not only Sudan’s immediate neighbors but also the security of the entire region.

To achieve long-term peace and accountability, the IOLDC called for a comprehensive approach to transitional justice, urging the international community and regional actors to directly address the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence in any future negotiations.

The IOLDC remains committed to supporting Sudan in its path toward peace, stability, and justice and continues to advocate for protecting human rights in all Least Developed Countries.
