OIPMA Highlights Key Human Rights Challenges at the 57th UN Human Rights Council

Geneva, [26.09.2024] — The International Organisation for the Least Developed Countries (OIPMA) delivered a  statement at the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, urging the Advisory Committee to address the pressing challenges hindering human rights progress in Least Developed Countries (LDCs). OIPMA called for the Committee to focus on the constraints its members have faced over the past 16 years and take action to overcome these barriers.

In their statement, OIPMA identified the following significant issues negatively impacting human rights, particularly in LDCs:

  1. Political Instability and Conflicts: Ongoing instability in many regions continues to undermine peace and security and threaten human rights protections.
  2. Extremism, Intolerance, and Terrorism: The rise of extremist ideologies, hate, and terrorism are exacerbating social divisions and infringing upon fundamental human rights.
  3. Racial Discrimination: OIPMA called for concrete global action to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, which remain persistent in many countries.
  4. Disinformation: The spread of false information is weakening public trust and creating an environment of confusion and division, posing a serious threat to democracy and human rights.
  5. Weak Legal Systems: Many LDCs face challenges due to inadequate legal frameworks, which prevent proper protection and enforcement of human rights.
  6. Climate Change and Environmental Degradation: Climate change disproportionately impacts LDCs, exacerbating poverty and displacement and eroding fundamental human rights.

OIPMA called upon the Chair of the Advisory Committee to present a clear plan of action to follow up on these recommendations, stressing that without decisive action, these issues will continue to undermine human rights efforts worldwide, particularly in LDCs.

OIPMA remains committed to supporting human rights efforts in the world’s Least Developed Countries and will continue to engage with the Human Rights Council to ensure the voices of these vulnerable nations are heard and acted upon.
